How enlightenment permanently alters your brain | Dr. Andrew Newberg

Enlightenment is a traditionally mystical and slippery concept, but when it is subjected to the rigors of empirical analysis, there is a lot to be learned about our brains and ourselves. ❍ Subscribe to The Well on YouTube: https://bit.ly/welcometothewell ❍ Up next: How to live an intellectual life https://youtu.be/3BnzdsjpypY Dr. Andrew Newberg says that there are two kinds of enlightenment: enlightenment with a "lowercase e," which changes our opinions about the world, and Enlightenment with a "capital E," which changes our essence — that is, how we think about life, death, and God. Capital-E Enlightenment is notable because of how people report the experience anecdotally, as well as how it changes the brain. If there is a sensation associated with this type of Enlightenment — such as seeing a light or color or hearing a sound — it is described as one of the most intense experiences that a person has ever had. And this intensity is reflected in the brain’s limbic system, which processes emotion, and in its parietal lobe, which organizes our sensory information to create sensations of time, space, and self. When people experience Enlightenment, they frequently report losing their sense of self, and scientific analysis confirms that brain activity is driving this sensation. Though Enlightenment is typically associated with fervently religious or spiritual individuals like Mother Teresa or the Buddha, people from all walks of life can experience essence-changing events — sometimes just walking down the street, Dr. Newberg tells us. Similar experiences can be purposefully induced through the use of pharmacological substances like LSD or hallucinogenic mushrooms. Philosophically, what does Enlightenment mean? According to Dr. Newberg, perhaps Enlightenment is like a pair of glasses: We are born into the world with bad vision until we experience corrective lenses. In this case, the "lenses" are being applied to our brain rather than our eyes. The neuroscience of spiritual experiences | Patrick McNamara

Experimental neuroscientist Patrick McNamara on how we can harness spiritual experience to explore alternate realities in our minds, and transform our models of the self. ❍ Subscribe to The Well on YouTube: https://bit.ly/welcometothewell ❍ Up next: How enlightenment permanently alters your brain https://youtu.be/3PIQj7Fxk30 Patrick McNamara, an experimental neuroscientist, argues that the function of religion is not just to quell existential anxiety or stave off the fear of death, but to disrupt current models of the self, and update those models in relation to the world around us. Religious experiences promote imaginative simulation of other possible worlds, giving us space to update those models respective of our circumstances. One core facet of the spiritual experience is what McNamara calls ‘de-centering’ — a powerful neurotechnology that promotes self-transformation, but which makes us incredibly vulnerable when triggered. When held in the context of a ritual, like many religious practices promote, we can achieve massive growth and transcendence. But de-centering isn’t just safe within the context of religion: non-religious people can re-discover or create their own rich traditions to support the de-centering experience. The field of experimental neuroscience is uncovering some fundamental aspects of human nature and human experience, simultaneously enhancing our understanding of this realm but also deepening the mystery. McNamara's research sheds light on the potential benefits of religion and ritual, and highlights how much more is still to be learned about how these processes can be harnessed for positive transformation. Expand your perception. Change your life. | Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor

Neuroanatomist Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor explains the 4 key ”characters” of the brain, and how understanding each can expand your perception of yourself, and the world, forever. Subscribe to Big Think on YouTube ► https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvQECJukTDE2i6aCoMnS-Vg?sub_confirmation=1 Watch the full Perception Box series ► https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5uULy4b0kV4iomWS7CzqCdOCwj0lFnLr&si=yCY6Ee7m6bpj7E-y At age 37, neuroanatomist Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor suffered a stroke that would take her eight years to fully recover from. This is how it changed her understanding of the brain. In this interview, Dr. Jill draws a map of the human brain, explaining how it is comprised of four distinct modules, each serving a unique role in function and personality. This combination of cognitive and emotional components gives rise to the multidimensional characters within each of us. Are you looking to be more rational, more creative, more forgiving, or perhaps less rigid in your thinking? Dr. Jill suggests that by becoming aware of the four modules of our brains, we can consciously choose to engage specific parts. This awareness allows us to harness the true power of our brains and shape who we want to become, ultimately fostering less anxiety, more inner peace, and a vastly more purposeful life. In 1996 she experienced a severe hemorrhage (AVM) in the left hemisphere of her brain causing her to lose the ability to walk, talk, read, write, or recall any of her life. Her memoir, My Stroke of Insight, documenting her experience with stroke and eight-year recovery, spent 63 weeks on the New York Times nonfiction bestseller list and is still routinely the #1 book in the category Stroke in the Amazon marketplace. Dr. Jill is a dynamic teacher and public speaker who loves educating all age groups, academic levels, as well as corporations and not-for-profit organizations about the beauty of our human brain. She focuses on how we can activate the power of our neuroplasticity to not only recover from neurological trauma, but how we can purposely choose to live a more flexible, resilient, and satisfying life. In 2008 Dr. Jill gave the first TED talk that ever went viral on the Internet, which now has well over 27.5 million views. Also in 2008, Dr. Jill was chosen as one of Time magazine’s “100 Most Influential People in the World” and was the premiere guest on Oprah Winfrey’s “Soul Series” webcast. Her new book, Whole Brain Living – the Anatomy of Choice and the Four Characters That Drive Our Life is a #1 release on Amazon in categories ranging from Neuroscience to Nervous System Diseases and Stroke.

This interpretation is influenced by past experiences and is often predictive, with the brain creating categories of similar instances to anticipate future events. The brain’s categorization process extends beyond physical characteristics to include abstract, functional features. This ability allows humans to create “social reality,” where we collectively assign functions or meanings to objects or concepts that don’t inherently possess them, such as the value of money or the concept of borders and citizenship. The brain’s capacity for imagination, drawing from past experiences to create something entirely new, is a double-edged sword. While it allows for creativity and innovation, it can also lead to difficulties in staying present. 0:00 The debate over reality 0:57 Objective reality 3:54 Social reality Read the video transcript ► https://bigthink.com/the-well/what-is-reality/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=youtube_description ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- About Lisa Feldman Barrett: Dr. Lisa Feldman Barrett is among the top 1% most-cited scientists in the world, having published over 250 peer-reviewed scientific papers. The biggest myths about emotions, debunked | Lisa Feldman Barrett

No, emotions don’t happen TO you. Here’s what happens instead. ❍ Subscribe to The Well on YouTube: https://bit.ly/welcometothewell ❍ Up next: What trauma does to your brain and body https://youtu.be/ZKa7V_mV8l8 With the growth of self-help books and the fight to destigmatize therapy, people today are perhaps more unafraid than ever to talk about their emotions. But this has led to some common myths about emotions, and neuroscientist Lisa Feldman Barrett wants to debunk them. Barrett argues that emotions are not hardwired into the brain from birth, but rather stem from events that the brain creates based on past experiences and predictions of what's going to happen. Contrary to popular understanding, emotions are not just reactive events that happen to us — we play an active role in creating them. By learning new things, watching movies, or even acting in a play to get outside of the normal range of what the brain predicts, Barrett argues that it’s possible to change those predictive patterns, and by doing so, to become the architects of our future selves. Understanding how our brain creates emotions can help us manage them — freeing us from repeated patterns of behavior and empowering us to control our emotions and heal ourselves. On the occasion of Rupert's 60th Birthday, he would like to share this yoga meditation with you all. In this meditation we contemplate truth, love and beauty, three pathways to ourself. We peer beyond the veil of the multiplicity and diversity of experience to the one indivisible experience, the knowing of ourself. Guided Meditation: Let the World Lose Itself in You
37:38
In this guided meditation we are invited to look beyond the limitations that perception and thought confer on reality. In doing so we see that the fact of simply being extends way beyond the limitations of the body and mind. Rupert says that when being looks at itself through the prism of perception it perceives itself as forms. When being looks at itself through the filter of thought, it knows itself as names. But when being looks at itself directly, unmediated, it experiences itself as it essentially is: Eternal, infinite, without a name or a form. As we sink more deeply into our being, our being loses the limitations that it borrows from the content of experience. The human experiences of peace, joy, love, and beauty are not really human experiences. They are instances where the infinite, the divine has seeped through the veil of appearances and is announcing itself in our world. Guided Meditation: ‘I Am’ Is the Highest Truth
44:27
Why is ‘I am’ considered the highest truth, the ultimate knowledge and the culmination of all experience in philosophy, religion and spiritual traditions? Rupert says: ‘Everything we know through the mind appears in accordance with the limitations of that mind. So, when we look at the world through the mind, we can never know what it really is. Exactly the same is true if we want to look at our self. In order to know the nature of awareness, we cannot look at it through the faculties of thinking and perceiving. The only absolutely true knowledge would be awareness’s knowledge of itself. ‘Awareness’s experience of itself is the experience that we refer to when we say “I am”. It is the ordinary, familiar, intimate experience that is present for each of us now. It is the most profound experience one can ever have, and we are actually having it all the time. And it is the only experience that does not take place through the mind. Thus the words “I am” are the highest truth.’ *This video is from one of Rupert’s in-person retreats at Mandali, 20–27 April 2024. Guided Meditation: Let Go of Experience and Recognise the Self
19:01
In this deeply meditative non-dual experience, Rupert shows us how to let go of experience and its boundaries. As we disentangle ourselves for the content of experience, our true, unlimited self is revealed. As we rest in our being of pure awareness, our being is divested of limitations and its nature of peace of revealed. In time, we feel that the being that we essentially are is the same being that everyone and everything essentially is. We see that the boundary we had made up between ourselves and all people, animals and things was merely a boundary made up of thought. Guided Meditation: The Search for Happiness Is the Veiling of Happiness
30:12
In this guided meditation on happiness we are pointed towards the basic fact of being aware. But, how does focusing on this help unveil the innate happiness inside each of us? Rupert says to search for lasting happiness is a misnomer. Happiness cannot be found, it can only be recognised. To search for happiness is to deny its presence. The search for happiness is the veiling of happiness. Simply notice the fact of being aware that lies in the background of experience. It is not necessary to do anything to become this aware emptiness. In time it becomes clear that this transparency, this openness, is our unnatural condition. This presence does not need anything from experience. This inherent absence of the sense of lack is the experience we know as joy or happiness. 0:00 Guided Meditation On Happiness 6:27 Does Meditation Bring Happiness? 10:07 You Are The Happiness You Seek 16:28 The Key To Find Happiness 19:59 Ending The Search For Happiness 25:11 Unveiling Our Innate Happiness –– ACCESS FULL VIDEO ARCHIVE You can watch or listen to 1000s of hours of teachings, guided meditations and answers in Rupert's full video archive here: ▸ https://rupertspira.com/subscriptions –– RETREATS (Weekend, 5-day, 7-day) Rupert holds regular retreats, roughly once per month, either in-person and online. Meditation: Contemplating the Contemplator
49:25
We begin this meditation by making a clear distinction between the knower and the objects that are known. We see that knowing is not just in the background of experience but pervades all experience. Finally, we understand that all experience is a vibration of infinite knowing, that the world is what the inside of God's mind looks like when viewed from the perspective of the separate subject of experience, and that our finite mind is a viewpoint, not an individual entity. Quantum Consciousness Debate: Does the Wave Function Actually Exist? | Penrose, Faggin & Kastrup

Two giants of science and technology—Nobel Laureate in physics, Sir Roger Penrose, and inventor of the microprocessor, Federico Faggin—meet to discuss their ideas on the relationship between Quantum Physics and consciousness, with the special participation of our own Bernardo Kastrup. While always respectful and congenial, the participants don't shy away from disagreements. Their starting difference regards Quantum Theory itself: while Federico Faggin and Bernardo Kastrup allow its implications to inform their views, Sir Roger Penrose believes the theory itself to be at least incomplete and require further development. The discussion helps pin down and make explicit the fine points of the three gentlemen's respective ideas regarding consciousness.
